Can someone please explain the TOEFL system, teaching of English as a foreign language?

I volunteer teaching English for non-profit, just keep hearing about it. How does it work?

    The test is given in English, has four sections on reading, speaking, listening and writing and takes about 4 1/2 hours. The test is given on fixed dates 30-40 times times a year at secure internet-based centres. To register for the said exam visit tofel.org

    TOEFL, TESL, TEFL are all terms for teaching English to speakers of other languages. As to how it works, my course lasted an academic year. I can’t answer in one or two paragraphs.
