If you have come in here to read this article, you are probably anxious about your TOEFL IBT Preparation. TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language and it is used to grant student visas and other immigration visas that will allow a foreigner to reside in an English speaking country.
Many non English speaking applicants fret and worry about TOEFL IBT Preparation. This article will give out some tips that might help a person relax their frayed nerves and use some simple tips to improve their chances of a better performance in a TOEFL IBT test.
As you might know, the TOEFL exam will test a person’s reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The only way to improve all four of these aspects is by actually practicing them. Many applicants who take the TOEFL often make the mistake of relying on books to prepare for the exam. While sample tests and mock exams are definitely good, one would be much better off practicing these skills on their own.
For example, one can start to speak in English with their close friend. Try to pick someone who has better English skills than you and converse with them in English. Request them to correct your mistakes. You will find that most people will only be glad to help you out. The more and more you speak, the more confident you will feel about the language. This will allow you to do well in the speaking part of the test.
For the listening part, your best bet would be to listen to English shows on TV. Try to focus and listen to what the people are saying. If you have captions on your TV, disable them or use some tape to cover the part of the TV screen that reads out the captions. Not being able to see the captions will make you focus harder on the pronunciations that will in turn greatly improve your listening skills.
As for reading, you will have no choice but to rely on books and hone your English reading skills. Instead of reading to yourself, have good English speaking friends sit with you and read the text aloud. Again, request them to make any corrections to your reading if necessary.
As for writing skills, you can only get better with practice. If you do not have anything to write, just sit down and write the events of your day in a diary. You can even write a small short story on any topic that you like. The important thing is to do it regularly and consistently.
Following the tips above will allow you to do very well with your TOEFL IBT Preparation and the actual test itself.
