It is becoming more difficult for Chinese students to successfully apply for admission to a U.S. university, and SAT results have become far less important than TOEFL Scores, said Zhang Hengrui, a senior consultant from a study-abroad service center who has visited 26 of the top-100 U.S. universities and interviewed admissions officers.

Currently, all 2010 admissions letters for U.S. universities to the undergraduate degree applicants have been delivered.

U.S. universities value the high school achievements of prospective students, but they place a higher value students’ class rank. Recommendation letters and materials recording the student’s participation in extracurricular activities, which were once considered to be crucial, have become much less important in the application process.

Ohio State University, which ranks 56th in the United States, had 25,000 2010 undergraduate degree applicants in total, including 3,000 international students. Of the international applicants, 1,200 were from the Chinese mainland, an increase of 400 applicants compared to 2009.

The competition for acceptance to the University of Michigan is even fiercer. Of the applicants, 5,000 are international students including 2,100 Chinese students, seven times higher than that in 2005.
